thumb pressure massageToday we have a second set of massage strokes that will add variety and depth to your massage strokes repertoire and help ease tension in different parts of the body.

  1. Fanning is a variation of effleurage and is also a warming stroke that works well on the back and is good for relaxing large areas of the body’s muscle tissue. Put your hands on both sides of your partner’s spine. Press down and fan your hands out toward the sides of the body. Slowly move your hands up slightly and repeat the fanning motion. Continue up the back until you have covered the entire back, probably about 4 or 5 times. This technique can also be used during self massage to ease muscular tension in the tops of the thighs.
  2. Thumb pressures is a technique that works well in the grooves along the spine. Place one thumb on each side of your partner’s spine, about an inch apart. Lean in to apply pressure with the thumbs for a few seconds then ease off. Ask you partner if the pressure is comfortable or not. Move the thumbs up about an inch and repeat until you’ve gone all the way up the back. For self massage, thumb pressure works great in lines from the knee, up across the top of the thigh and out toward the outside of the hip to overcome cellulite.
  3. Reflex stroke is a relaxing movement that is good to end a massage treatment. Glide your hands gently over the massaged area, one after the other in flowing movements. Let your touch grow gradually lighter as you finish the massage.

Below are two synergistic blends for you to use during your massage sessions. Be sure to blend the oils in a dark colored bottle and then pour in a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil, jojoba oil or liquid shea oil. The formula below should be diluted in 2 tablespoons of carrier oil.

Synergistic Blend I
  • 10 drops of lavender
  • 10 drops of eucalyptus
  • 10 drops of ginger
Synergistic Blend II
  • 10 drops of peppermint
  • 10 drops of rosemary
  • 10 drops of basil
