Take a look at your current health care plan and you can see why people are seeking alternative health care remedies – health care costs continue to rise. It’s no wonder why people are looking for cheaper alternatives; especially for routine illnesses like common colds, sinusitis, constipation and migraine. Some folks are even finding remedies or at least relief for arthritis, Alzheimer’s, psoriasis, alopecia and other chronic and mild illnesses.

Naturopaths say that for every illness, there is a suitable natural healing alternative. Aromatherapy is a viable much less expensive alternative health care option which uses essential oils or volatile liquid from plant materials and certain aromatic compounds. Basically, the essential oils have an effect on an individual’s health or mood. Look for more on this subject in future posts.

Moisture for Dry Hands

f112b4b91b1cd23749729161b29741b61f9f4d2c_600My friend’s husband does a lot of work with his hands; he does construction work at his job and when he’s home, he does a lot of woodworking as a hobby. Since he’s constantly working with his hands, he commented that his hands often feel dry and they look like the skin is starting to crack. They’re not nearly as smooth as someone who rarely works with their hands.

Another reason why his hands are so much rougher than they need to be is because he doesn’t use a moisturizer. I think I’m going to try to get her husband to start using moisturizer, because I don’t think it’s very good for his skin or his hands to allow them to get so dry and cracked. Some moisturizer will likely prevent problems in the future.

Sore Back Treatment

massage oilHave you been overdoing the yard work recently and now  you have a back ache? I have an aromatherapy treatment for back pain that I will share with you. The best way to administer this treatment is to massage the sore area. Massage using essential oils provides welcome relief from chronic back pain because the oils penetrate deeply into the sore contracted muscles causing them to expand. Essential oils also cause increased blood flow to the sore area and allow torn tissues to be repaired by the body. Use any of the following essential oils in blends of 2 to 3 oils and then use 5 drops of the blend per 1 teaspoon of a good carrier oil like sweet almond oil, jojoba oil or liquid shea oil.

Ginger essential oil enjoys hot yoga and so do I. Hot yoga is right in line with ginger essential oil’s spicy, unique personality. It also has the effect of helping your muscles feel strong, loose, and relaxed. Sometimes those same muscles feel less relaxed after a good hot yoga session. Once the heat cools down, muscles can start to tighten up. Soreness and tension can creep in and make you uncomfortable.

True to its unique nature, ginger essential oil has a creative way to care for sore muscles. It makes a muscle tension inhaler—yes, an inhaler! Breathing in ginger essential oil helps you feel relaxed and uplifted, which translates to more relaxed muscles and less pain. Here’s a wonderful inhaler blend you can make for yourself:

Ginger’s Active Muscle Care Inhaler

  • 2 drops ginger
  • 4 drops lavender
  • 3 drops sweet basil
  • 6 drops frankincense

Inhalers are fun to make! Andrea Butje from Aromahead describes the process of making one in this post from The Aromahead Blog (which has another great muscle tension inhaler blend!).

All you have to do is soak the cotton insert of the inhaler in the essential oils, load it into the inhaler sleeve, and snap it closed. You can find colorful, disposable inhalers at Fragrance World of Topeka.  Aromatics International has reusable inhalers, which are wonderful if you use your inhaler often and want to reload it with new blends but they are more expensive.

Do you have a stressful job that keeps you anxious all day? This is a roll-on stress relief blend you can keep in your pocket! Peppermint and basil essential oils are both known for their cool, collected presence. They are emotionally centering while still inspiring an alert, attentive mental state. (Reducing stress doesn’t have to mean you’re falling asleep!)

  • 1/3 ounce jojoba oil
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 4 drops sweet basil essential oil
You can find roll-on bottles for this blend at Fragrance World of Topeka. To make it, simply combine the ingredients in the bottle, snap the roller-top into place, and roll it onto your wrists, neck, or anywhere you’d like. The professionals at Fragrance World of Topeka will make the blend for you. All you need to do is wear it!

VetiverVetiver oil has been used in traditional medicine in South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Africa for thousands of years. It’s native to India, and both its leaves and roots have wonderful uses. Vetiver is known as a sacred herb valued because of its uplifting, soothing, healing and protective properties. It’s a natural body cooler — making it extremely popular in tropical countries. In fact, in India and Sri Lanka it’s known as the “oil of tranquility.”

Some of vetiver oil uses include treating heat strokes, joint disorders and skin problems. Using vetiver oil is also a way to boost energy levels when you’re exhausted. In addition, it’s used to cool the body during very high temperatures and soothe feelings of anxiety and nervousness. Now here are 6 excellent reasons to use vetiver essential oil.

  1. Vetiver oil promotes the regeneration of skin and tissue, which helps rejuvenate the skin and remove dark spots, acne and scars. It also has anti-aging properties that work to treat stretch marks and wrinkles. Simply add a few drops of vetiver oil to your face wash, body wash or lotion for an improved complexion.
  2. Vetiver oil possesses the ability to protect the body against damage caused by free radicals. Benefits of this powerful antioxidant include healthy skin, slower aging, better detox support and reduced cancer risk.
  3. A 2001 study showed that vetiver oil is effective in treating children who have ADHD. Researchers tested different essential oils in children with ADHD and found that vetiver oil increased performance by 100% in all participants. The calming properties of vetiver oil helped lessen ADHD symptoms and increase concentration.
  4. Research has shown that vetiver oil naturally boosts the immune system and the nervous system. It has a protective effect on the body, working to lessen toxicity. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, studies have shown that vetiver oil is able to inhibit DNA damage, while stimulating the immune system and providing support to the nervous system.
  5. Vetiver oil can be used in aromatherapy to promote relaxation and reduce stress. Studies have shown the oil can help with anxiety, panic attacks, insomnia and depression. In one study, vetiver oil was found to have the same impact as Diazepam, a calming medication for anxiety, muscle spasms, seizures and other conditions. Add a few drops to your oil burner and inhale.
  6. Researchers at the the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center analyzed eight different essential oils for their ability to repel termites. They found that vetiver oil proved to be the most effective due to its long-lasting activity. It effectively repelled termites and may also have the ability to repel mosquitoes.

Anti-Aging Neck Care II

Author: Dr. Larita
August 18, 2017

When your neck starts showing signs of age, you might want to give it a special tightening treatment with the following synergistic  blend of essential oils. Use 10 drops of rose, 7 drops clary-sage, 10 drops lemon, and 20 drops carrot essential oil blended well with 1 teaspoon  of evening primrose oil. Gently massage this mixture into the skin and leave it on for at least ten minutes before wiping off the excess oil.

After a long cold winter of wearing turtle-neck sweaters and woolen scarves, the neck will benefit greatly if you slough off dead skin cells, brighten up and tone the neck and prepare it for a treatment oil as discussed in part I of anti-aging neck care. Mix 1 teaspoon of ground almond with 1/2 teaspoon of jojoba oil into a paste and rub it all over the neck and chest area in upward movements. Leave this on for 10 minutes then rinse it off with water followed by a rinse with the following tonic water: 1/4 teaspoon cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon spring water, 1 teaspoon witch hazel, and 2 drops lemon essential oil. Mix the lemon essential oil with the witch hazel and then blend that with the other ingredients. Rinse most of the paste off with water and then add the vinegar tonic water to the final rinse until all the almond paste is gone. Finish the treatment by massaging the neck with a natural moisturizing cream.
