Baby Aromatherapy Blends

baby with coldAll mothers worry about protecting their baby from colds during the winter or anytime they are exposed to other sick children. You should not use essential oil treatments on babies and children as a precaution, because someone else in the home has a cold. To protect your baby, use essential oils diluted in water in a plant spray bottle to use around the house. Spray in the hall outside baby’s room but not in the room.

The easiest way to treat a baby’s cold is to place a small bowl of boiling water to which you have added 3 drops of eucalyptus oil under the baby’s bed at the opposite end from his head. The steam will rise and molecules of the eucalyptus aroma will be released into the room.

You can also use this synergistic blend to treat baby’s cold symptoms:

To use this synergistic blend, place 3 drops on a diffuser in the bedroom for overnight and again during the day. For difficult breathing, place 2 drops on a piece of cotton and place it under the edge of  baby’s pillow. When giving baby a bath, add 1 drop of the synergistic blend to the water and swish it around (for babies and children one to five years old, add 2 drops to the bath.) You can also make a massage oil using 3 drops of the synergistic blend to 2 teaspoons almond oil and massage this over baby’s chest and back.

Aromatherapy Helps Me Stay Calm Through A Busy Day

I am often running from one place to another and some of my days are super busy. I literally am doing one task after another from the time that I get up to the time that I am going to bed without any free time in between. It can get hard to get through a busy day and I often feel really stressed out and like I can’t stop to even take a breath.

It is nice to have some good essential oils to help me to keep my focus and to not let my emotions and my stress get to me. Sometimes I just feel like giving up if I am trying to get a lot done but if I push through it, it always ends up being really rewarding. It is nice to have some great essential oils to get me through a busy day.

Getting some nice aromatherapy in with my essential oils is really great and I love having the oils to ensure that I am staying in a great mood and not letting my stress overwhelm me. I have a nice essential oil diffuser at work and I have some great oils all throughout my home as well. The oils are a nice way for me to stay calm and keep a good balance.

Essential Oils for Baby

Do not use an essential oil on a baby until it is at least 24 hours old and even then, only if you have good reason to use it. One good reason is dry and wrinkled skin which many babies have after being in amniotic fluid for nine months and especially if they were overdue or induced. When my first daughter was born, she was absolutely beautiful with lots of curly hair and smooth, clear skin. When my second daughter was born 18 months later I was expecting the same beautiful little angel but she had red splotches and thin straight hair!

If your baby is born with skin problems or develops them early on, you can have a synergistic essential oil blend ready to treat it right away.

  • Wrinkled skin – Mix 8 drops chamomile and 1 drop lavender then put 3 drops of this mixture in 2 tablespoons of the carrier oil mixture of almond oil, evening primrose oil and jojoba oil discussed earlier.
  • Diaper rash – 1 drop chamomile and 1 drop lavender. When you wash baby’s bottom, use a cotton ball dipped in a bowl of 1-pint warm water with one drop of your diaper rash blend added. Swish the water around well first. Use a clean cotton ball each time until the baby is clean and then dry baby’s bottom. Add 1 drop of your essential oil blend to 4 teaspoons of a castor oil cream and zinc mixture. If you have stored your synergistic blend in an amber glass bottle, you can just mix one drop in with 2 teaspoons of the cream and store this in a small sterile container (pill box) and use as necessary.
  • Cradle cap – Mix 1 drop eucalyptus/lemon oil and 1 drop geranium oil and add it to 2 tablespoons of almond oil and shake well. Apply very gently to the scalp with your fingertips avoiding baby’s soft spot. Use this formula once a day until the cradle cap goes away.

Essential Oils for Newborns

If you are pregnant and want to use pure and natural essential oils to keep your baby in good health and treat him or her when necessary for illness, you should start looking now for appropriate small containers to keep the baby’s various creams and lotions in. Your essential oils will come in small brown glass bottles but you will also need tiny pots or pillboxes that have been washed and sterilized. When the baby’s here and you need an essential oil remedy, you don’t want to have to run around looking for a container for the very small quantities you will use.

The essential oils to use for newborn babies are dill, chamomile, or lavender and only in one of two different methods. The first method is to place a bowl of steaming water on the floor in baby’s room, away from the baby’s head. Add 1 drop of essential oil to the steaming water so that it fills the room as it rises with the steam. Do not use more than one drop of essential oil added to a pint of water.

The other way to use essential oils in the baby’s room is to add it to a glazed surface diffuser. Do not use the natural-looking porous clay type of diffuser with babies and children because you need to be able to clean the diffuser thoroughly and that is not possible with clay diffusers. Even one single drop of essential oil added neat to a diffuser is too much for babies. You must add 1 drop of oil to 2 teaspoons of water, mix well and then add a little of this mixture to the diffuser bowl.

Use dill essential oil if your baby is ill with any kind of digestive problem,  such as colic, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, or regurgitation. If the baby has trouble sleeping, use chamomile in the diffuser. Use lavender essential oil to clean up the air in baby’s room and make it smell pleasant. Lavender is also exceptional for its antibiotic, antiseptic, disinfectant and antiviral properties. Even though you only use 1 drop diluted in water in the baby’s diffuser, the fragrance will be lovely and much better for the baby than chemical air fresheners that you can buy for the nursery.

Natural Moisturizers Keep My Youthful Glow Alive

I love to keep my skin looking as smooth and soft as possible. I love it when my skin has a natural and beautiful glow to it and I want my skin to look youthful and healthy for as long as possible. Using the right skin care products like a good moisturizer helps me to ensure that my skin stays looking its best and that I can feel confident every day.

I used to really struggle with dry and cracked skin and it really made me feel insecure. People would sometimes comment on my skin when it got so dry that it cracked. I would get little cuts all over my hands in the wintertime because of how dry my skin got and I never seemed to be able to find a product that kept that dryness away.

Now that I have discovered the power of natural moisturizers, I no longer have to worry about having dry skin or skin that is dull. I love what these moisturizers have done for my skin and my natural beauty. I no longer feel tightness from dry skin on my face or have to worry about peeling skin and the aged look that dry skin gives you.

No matter how thoroughly you moisturize them, the skin on your hands is going to dry out, but you can reduce the risk of cracks and bleeding by applying a strong hand cream at least three times daily. Try to avoid harsh soaps and excessively hot water when washing your hands, and re-apply hand cream after every cleaning.

Essential oils can also help to keep your hands looking their best. You can simply blend the essential oils for your specific problem into your hand cream.

  • Antiseptic Oils: rosemary, lemon, eucalyptus, lavender, lime
  • Oils for Dry Hands: rose, geranium, sandalwood, patchouli, carrot
  • Oils for Neglected Hands: rose, lemon, geranium, patchouli

Cooler temperatures will always make effective skincare more difficult. However, with natural skincare, a few minor changes to your regular routine will go a long way in keeping your skin beautiful.

We’re continuing our blog on natural skin care for the cold weather season. We want to help you keep your skin healthy and radiant with a few changes to your warm weather skin care.

Your normal exfoliating practice might be very effective during the warm months, but it could prove to be too much for the cold season. Frequent or vigorous scrubs and cleanses will expose your new young skin to the harsh, dry air of winter without enough protection. If your moisturizing routine is still leaving you dry after exfoliating, consider cutting back on your weekly scrubs and instead use a natural exfoliating soap that can be used daily.

The following oil works very well when used after the drying conditions of winter activities. It is a thick oil but is great in protecting your face when it is exposed to sunburn after skiing, sailing, or hiking.

  • Chamomile – 10 drops
  • Geranium – 10 drops
  • Lavender – 10 drops
    Diluted in
  • Jojoba oil – 1 teaspoon
  • Evening primrose oil – 1 teaspoon
  • Almond oil – 2 teaspoons

Blend these ingredients together well and gently massage into the skin every night before bed and also during the day as a sunscreen.

Natural Skin Care for Winter

For many people, the first signs of winter are a welcome reprieve from sweltering heat, but saying goodbye to those summer sweats can wreak havoc on your skin. Even a slight chill can lead to unwanted dryness but a few simple changes to your daily routine will help keep your skin radiant and healthy.

At the first sign of cold weather, look for skincare products and makeups that contain powerful moisturizers. Face creams should be working hard to protect your skin from those blustery breezes, and your makeup should be no different. Choose products that might be heavier than your regular brand, but not so heavy that they clog your pores. Look for solutions that are particularly effective on your T-zone, as this area is most prone to dryness.

Cooler temperatures always make effective skincare more difficult so make the switch to winter skincare products early. Use your winter-ready products daily to help fight the effects of winter weather and keep your skin healthy.

Lose Weight with Patchouli

I have a reader question that I would like to discuss today. Jenny asked if I would help her with more information on how to lose weight with patchouli essential oil. First, Jenny, there is no wonder drug or essential oil that will help you to eat less. It is really about self control and your own mindset that you want to change your body through diet and exercise. Visualize a piece of meat and imagine cutting and separating the fat from the lean part. If your diet consists of fruits, vegetables, fish and meat, your body tissue will look like the lean cut of meat. On the other hand, if you eat cakes and sweets, potatoes smothered in butter and fatty meats, you body tissue will be like the fatty part.

There are many essential oils that help fight fat but Jenny asked abut patchouli which can help dieters in several ways. First, it has the ability to diminish your appetite. Regularly put 2-3 drops of patchouli into a diffuser and let it diffuse through the air to reduce your appetite. This is a good way to balance the diet and exercise program you are on. You can also put 8-10 drops of patchouli into your bath water. This will not only help you to reduce your appetite, it may also ease water retention and bloating. Massaging your body with 1 ounce of a good carrier oil containing 2-3 drops of patchouli will also ease water retention and help you tone your body as your diet and exercise program help you lose weight. Jenny, I hope this is helpful to you and to any others interested in losing weight.
