Aromatherapy at Home

Many rooms in a home or apartment open onto the hallway and the scents from each room mingle to form a unique aroma that is distinct to that home. Most hallways have no windows so smells linger and fill the area with stale air creating a kind of aroma smog. Hallways need a fresh pleasant fragrance rather than the spicy herb-scented aroma of the kitchen or the heavily scented oils that might be used in other rooms.

A good suggestion for a hallway fragrance is the citrus oils of grapefruit, lemon, lime or bergamot essential oil. Any of these oils can be blended with lavender to give an uplifting aspect or geranium to impart a calming effect. Use the geranium when company is coming because it will make them feel good as soon as they enter your home. If someone has a cold or flu, add 2 to 3 drops of rosemary to the citrus base using a total of 8 drops of essential oil in 2 1/2 cups of water in a plant-spray bottle. Spray the carpet and stairs in your hallway to help freshen up the entire area.

Hallways get a lot of traffic and are likely to gather dust and scuff marks. Washing down the paintwork and baseboards is much more pleasant when you use the uplifting aroma of citrus essential oils, especially when you know that they are also antiseptic, disinfectant and can play other useful roles.

Martin Luther King Jr

Today, most of us are off from work because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Please take this time to think about the freedoms we have in America as well as the ones we don’t. Look at the voting act in your state and see how free you really are. Are restrictions being inflicted on Americans in your state? Stand up for what is right for all people like Martin Luther King Jr. did.

Our right to vote is being threatened in the name of protection from voter fraud but there is really no substantial evidence to indicate that voter fraud exists anywhere in our nation. The right to vote is fundamental to the democratic process. We should protect this right at all costs. The United States serves as a standard and a guideline for other nations seeking to embrace democracy.

Natural Wart Therapy

teasingWhen my youngest daughter was in elementary school she developed warts on her fingers. She was very embarrassed and she hid her hands as much as possible because kids that age can be very mean. Warts are small round tumors  of the skin caused by a virus. The warts that form on the soles of the foot are called verrucas.

Warts will go away on their own in time but who wants to wait that long? Your body will develop immunity to the virus eventually but you can chase those warts away naturally with a simple but effective treatment. Simply apply a single drop of tea tree essential oil directly onto the wart with a toothpick or an orange stick. Cover the wart with a band-aid and keep it covered.

Repeat this treatment daily until the wart shrivels and drops off. It can take anywhere from a few days to a month for that to happen. Once it does fall off, massage the area with shea butter, which is rich in vitamin E, to lessen the scarring and soreness. Adding a drop of lavender to the shea butter will speed the healing too.

Aromatherapy Questions

Author: Dr. Larita
January 11, 2018

I am answering a question from one of our blog readers today. I will start doing this in the blog as questions come up.

Q – I would really like to know more about aromatherapy. What is it, what are the benefits, what are some of the things that could be detrimental or harmful?

A – Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years. Our whole existence is based on aromas. If we disconnect our societal hang-ups and ourselves and went with just odors, we would see how important it is in everything we do. Our olfactory system is the fastest system in our body next to the brain’s system of thought. It registers on a level below conscious thought in less than a millisecond. We go into flight or fight even before we consciously recognize the odor. Our body is already reacting because this is what has kept us alive. There are some people on this planet that are as sensitive as dogs at hunting other people. There is a tribe in the Philippines that can literally hunt a man by his scent. Everybody is different and everybody has their own scent and so does every animal and every plant. So aromatherapy means treatment-using scents. It is a holistic practice dealing with the body using pleasant smelling botanical oils.

Most essential oils are safe to use but there are a number of them that should only be used under the guidance of a qualified aromatherapy practitioner or not at all. There are some that will cause abortions and historically, that is what they have been used for. Some can cause irritation to the skin and mucus membranes. Here is a list of those oils.

Yesterday I talked about aromatherapy for the hot flashes that are common when menopause strikes. Unfortunately, hot flashes are not the only symptom that assail the body during menopause. Today I want to give you some formulas for a few of the other ailments that menopausal women and some men deal with daily.

Day & Night Sweats Formula

  • 10 drops grapefruit
  • 10 drops lime
  • 5 drops sage
  • 5 drops thyme

Water Retention & Bloating Formula

  • 5 drops fennel
  • 5 drops juniper
  • 15 drops lemon
  • 5 drops peppermint

Circulatory Problems Formula

  • 10 drops geranium
  • 5 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops rose
  • 5 drops patchouli

For all of these formulas you can blend the essential oils and then dilute the synergistic blend in 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil like evening primrose or sweet almond oil. You can also use the synergistic blend on a 5 to 1 basis as a massage oil. Either way, massage the formula all over your body and use 5 drops in a daily bath.

Aromatherapy for Menopause

hot flashThe first time I got a hot flash, I was talking to a fellow music teacher and I suddenly got very hot and sweaty. My office was usually cold and I was always freezing so when John saw me fanning myself he asked me what was wrong. I hadn’t considered hot flashes but he had seen his wife go through the same changes so he said it must be one of those hot flashes. Well, that was embarrassing but it didn’t stop me from fanning myself.

You can take hormone replacement therapy or other chemical medications if you want but I don’t like to take anything that might cause other side effects. There is no need to anyway because there are much safer ways to help yourself in these situations. Eating nutritious foods, cooking with cold-pressed cooking oils, taking vitamins and using evening primrose oil are all very helpful. Essential oils are also very helpful with menopause.

Hot Flashes Synergistic Blend

  • 10 drops clary-sage
  • 11 drops geranium
  • 7 drops lemon
  • 2 drops sage

Dilute these oils in 4 teaspoons of carrier oil (evening primrose would be an additional help for hot flashes) and massage all over your body with 1 teaspoon at a time. You can also use 5 drops in your bath anytime you wish.

Three Steps to Clear Skin

clear skin1The first thing to do when you are ready to moisturize your face is to cleanse it with a gentle natural soap. Lather the soap in your hands with warm water and use gentle circular motions. Don’t forget to lather your neck too because it should be treated just as lavishly as your face.  You can rinse your face with warm water or use a face towel soaked in very warm water and wrung dry to steam your face. Just lay the warm towel on your face for about 30 seconds and then pat dry.

Second, wipe your face with a natural astringent like witch hazel or vinegar. I use cotton rounds because they are lint free, but you can use a cotton ball instead. I don’t use very much astringent so I don’t dry my face after applying it. If your face is wet after using the astringent, you are using too much and you should blot it dry and not use so much next time.

The third and last thing in this sequence is to apply a natural moisturizing cream like 30 Second Facelift. Rub about 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of the cream on your palms and fingertips. Wipe it on your face in circular motions starting on your cheeks and moving up to your forehead don’t forget your neck, starting at the base and moving up to the chin. When you have rubbed it in well, you can blot your face with a tissue. The only makeup I wear is a little  bit of lipstick. If you like, you can add eye makeup but you won’t need liquid makeup or powder since it just clogs your pores.

When you get those sugar cravings, use your diffuser with essential oil blends to stop them before you give in. For me, the act of getting the diffuser ready helps me to think about something besides that sweet treat I want to get and that is the first step. After that, the following blends shut off the craving and I can go about my way without adding a 160 calorie Oreo to my diet. Besides, I never could eat just one Oreo cookie and I had to have ice cream with it too.

“Curb Your Cravings” diffuser blend

3 drops dill essential oil

3 drops lemon essential oil

“In Control” diffuser blend

2 drops peppermint essential oil

2 drops lemon essential oil

2 drops bergamot essential oil

“Beat the Binge” diffuser blend

3 drops ocotea essential oil

2 drops orange essential oil

1 drop cypress essential oil

“Kick the Habit” diffuser blend

2 drops dill essential oil

1 drop fennel essential oil

2 drops lavender essential oil

2 drops lemongrass essential oil

“Crush the Cravings” diffuser blend
