  1. The main therapeutic ingredient in peppermint essential oil is menthol. It has local anesthetic properties and reduces throat irritations. Menthol is similar to the ingredient in cayenne or hot peppers, capsaicin, which stimulates heat sensors without really causing a change in temperature. Menthol, however, has a cooling effect on the body without changing the actual body temperature. Some medications may adversely interact with peppermint oil so please consult a physician it you have concerns about drug interactions.
  2. Muscle discomfort – Peppermint oil can reduce discomfort and relax muscles – dilute 2 to 4 drops and apply topically to the affected area. Use with a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil if you have sensitive skin.
  3. Respiratory health – Peppermint oil acts as an expectorant and can relieve some symptoms of respiratory issues. Dilute 2-4 drops and apply topically to your chest and the back of your neck. Or add 10 drops to boiling water, put a towel over your head and breath in the aroma for 5 minutes.
  4. Energy boosting – Because it is invigorating and stimulating, peppermint oil can help fight fatigue and improve focus and concentration. Diffuse it or apply it directly to your temples, wrists and the back of your neck. You can also inhale it directly from the bottle or add a drop or two to a tissue and sniff as needed.
  5. Allergy symptoms soother – Peppermint relaxes the muscles in the nasal passages and clears out mucus and pollen during allergy season. Diffuse 5 drops, inhale it from the bottle or a tissue as above or dilute 2-3 drops and apply it topically to forehead, neck and chest.
  6. Headache relief – Peppermint oil may improve circulation, soothe your stomach and relax tense muscles. It can also help clear your nasal passages when you suffer from a sinus headache. Apply it to your forehead and temples for relief.
  7. Digestive soother – Peppermint oil helps relax the muscles in the intestines and reduce bloating, gas and nausea. It can also serve as a natural remedy for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS.) Diffuse it, apply it topically to your abdomen or take 1-2 drops internally mixed with hot tea.
  8. Fresh Breath and Healthy and Gums – Peppermint  oil has anti-microbial properties that will freshen breath and may kill bacteria that lead to cavities and gum issues. Add 1 drop to your toothpaste or mouthwash or place one drop under your tongue before drinking a glass of water.

I need to have some good lotion for my skin so that I can ensure that my skin doesn’t get too dry and that it looks healthy all year long. The changing weather conditions can be very hard on my skin, as well as spending lots of time outdoors. I enjoy living an active lifestyle and I like to go hiking or to go on a half-day kayaking trip out on the ocean.

Being in the sun all day long can really dry out my skin and the changing weather can really dry out my skin as well. It is nice to have some great lotion to rely on so that I can make sure that my skin is staying soft and smooth and I can enjoy my daily outdoor activities freely. The lotion that I have been using has a nice lemongrass scent and it is amazing.

I like that this lotion is not too thick and that it absorbs easily into my skin and leaves me feeling fresh and ready for the beach or for a day at work. I use the lotion all the time and it has really helped my skin to stay healthy even during the harsh winters and when the weather gets unpredictable. The skin lotion is a nice way for me to ensure a healthy glow.

An important element of aromatherapy is synergy, which is why using a combination of oils often creates a much more powerful effect than any one particular oil. With a skilled aromatherapist, the possibilities are nearly endless!

In order to give you an idea of the versatility of aromatherapy, the following table lists some of the therapeutic uses of several oils for a few of today’s most common complaints. As you can see, there are some real “multitaskers,” like lavender and peppermint—oils that treat more than one problem.

Did you know that aromatherapy essential oils can help you concentrate and focus? Citrusy fresh scents like grapefruit and lime are very energizing. Got an upset tummy? Use these two oils blended in a carrier oil such as sweet almond oil to massage in a clockwise manner around your stomach. Rosemary oil has been proven in several studies to increase memory by 75%.


Watching your loved one’s intellect become disabled by the debilitating disease of Alzheimer’s is a disheartening experience. Living with and caring for a parent or spouse who no longer knows who you are may seem hopeless but aromatherapy massage can bring back your former closeness and introduce a new form of communication between the two of you. This is not a therapeutic massage, just a way to show love and caring so a gentle body massage or a foot or hand massage will do. The essential oils used in this aromatherapy massage will be not only pleasing to the Alzheimer’s sufferer’s senses and yours too, but could also reawaken pleasant memories. Any essential oil can be used but if the sufferer is your Mom and you know she always wore lavender perfume then lavender essential oil would be a perfect choice. Who knows what the Alzheimer’s patient, locked inside her brain, will experience with such an olfactory memory jerk?

Think back and try to recall the aromas your loved one favored and recreate them now. If you simply can’t remember, some good choices are the citrus essential oils of lemon, grapefruit, and orange plus the spices such as cardamom, coriander, ginger and nutmeg because they stimulate the gastric juices and also touch on the basic instincts of feeding and survival. In less advanced cases of Alzheimer’s you can incorporate the gentle fragrances of flowers such as lavender, rose, and geranium coupled with the spices mentioned above or even with basil or rosemary. Make a synergistic massage oil blend of 5 drops of rose, 5 drops of geranium, 2 drops of basil, 10 drops of lavender and 2 drops of rosemary essential oils. Add 5 drops of this blend to 1 teaspoon of jojoba or grapeseed oil and either give the full body massage, hand or foot massage or simply gently massage the neck and shoulder area.


I have been in the hereafter many times – I’m in the middle of a room but I can’t remember what I am “hereafter?” Recently I have been losing things like the cord to my cell phone, keys, books I am currently reading or who I was just getting ready to call. Use  the following essential oils in equal proportions in one of the room methods, either in a diffuser or in a plant spray for a simple and effective way to improve concentration:

  • Basil
  • Cardamom
  • Ginger
  • Black Pepper

Your brain is like an electrical circuit that can short out when switching from circuit to circuit making your mind go blank or get confused. This is a very involved subject that includes fortifying the brain with nourishing food and making certain your body gets certain vitamins, minerals, and micro-nutrients especially vitamins C and E, selenium and zinc. Pernicious anemia can be helped by taking vitamin B-12 and iron supplements and lack of potassium which accounts for memory loss in some of us can be remedied with potassium tablets. No, I don’t have a cure but I believe you will find some relief if you are caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s.

There are several types of chamomile essential oil but chamomile Roman is especially good when used for the treatment of insomnia and nervous conditions. Chamomile is an essential oil that is antibacterial, antiseptic, and disinfectant but it is most useful for its internal and external anti-inflammatory properties.

Chamomile can be used when children have teething problems and can be added to the bath to ease nerves and tetchiness. It can also be used to treat burns, sunburn, psoriasis, eczema, asthma, hay fever, diarrhea, sprains and strains, nausea, fever, and nervous or depressed states. Chamomile’s analgesic, diuretic, sedative and calming properties make it absolutely essential to have in your home.


The average person hears essential oils and they think it’s something that will make their home smell nice. And while that is certainly true, they also have many other uses that extend far beyond a pleasant fragrance.

There are a lot of essential oils out there, but if you plan on having only a few in the house, these are some good options.

Lavender

Marjoram Essential Oil

aromatherapy bathThe therapeutic properties of marjoram essential oil have been used for centuries. The Greeks used marjoram to relieve excess tissue fluid, as an antidote to poison and also to calm muscle spasms. Europeans used to sprinkle marjoram all over the floors to hide unpleasant smells. Today, we use marjoram  to add a unique flavor to foods. Aromatherapists use marjoram as an alternative treatment for anxiety and high blood pressure. It is a worthy and pleasing essential oil to have around.

Aromatherapy Applications for Marjoram Essential Oil

  • Use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or add 8-10 drops to bath water before bed to treat anxiety, grief, hyperactivity, insomnia, nervous tension and stress.
  • Use 2-3 drops per 1 ounce of jojoba carrier oil to massage areas of the body affected with arthritis, lumbago, muscular aches and stiffness, rheumatism and sprains.
  • Use 2-3 drops in 1 ounce of sweet almond oil and massage on chest and throat to treat asthma, bronchitis, colds and coughs.  You can also use 2-3 drops in a steam inhalation.
  • Use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil and dab on bruises or chilblains. You can use it neat if you carefully put it only on the affected area.
  • Use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil like liquid shea oil to massage your back for digestive problems like constipation, indigestion and flatulence.
  • Use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil for a full body massage or 8-10 drops in a bath to treat high blood pressure.
  • Use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil and massage it onto temples and neck for headaches and migraines. You can also use it on a hot or cold compress.
  • Use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil and massage it onto the lower abdomen and lower back to treat menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome. You can also use 2-3 drops on a hot compress or use 8-10 drops in your bath water.
  • Use 2-3 drops on a handkerchief and inhale occasionally for seasickness.

If you are pregnant, do not use marjoram for aromatherapy. It is also not suitable for use with children. If there is a diagnosis of depression, avoid using marjoram because it has a strong sedative property and overuse of the oil can cause drowsiness. I don’t know why anyone else would want to, but some religious institutions have used marjoram to suppress sexual desires and impulses because of its anti-aphrodisiac property.
