There are many wonderful essential oils that are really great for supporting your performance in sports or your recovery from a bit too much activity in sports. You can blend them in body oils, lotion blends, shower gels or make your own balms.

Some oils are great for recovery and some stimulating ones are great for performance. Some oils have antispasmodic and natural pain killing properties so are great to use in recovery of injuries. Here are a few of my favorite oils for these purposes:

Rosemary

This uplifting and fresh herbal essential oil is great for increasing energy. The oil is extracted from the leaves and smells just like the herb used in cooking. It’s also used in many hair care products because if its stimulating properties and it works as a memory stimulant so it can be used when studying or when you need to focus on something. Rosemary has a fresh herbal scent and helps with digestion and breathing too. It’s great for sports performance because it is energizing and stimulating and if you travel a lot, you can also use it to combat jet lag. You can add the oil to your shampoo and shower or bath products. It has antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties among many others. Rosemary is advised to avoid during pregnancy and when suffering from high blood pressure.

Birch

Birch oil is a natural painkiller with the main ingredients of salicylic acid and methyl salicylate. It is a fantastic oil to use for recovery from sports. It’s a great detoxing oil, speeding the recovery time after a performance. It’s antispasmodic and a great oil for rheumatism and arthritis as well as one of the best in treating cellulite. Birch is great for the skin and hair and is often used in body and hair products in some countries. It is made from the bark of a birch tree and has an herbal camphor type of scent. It is quite potent and you only need a few drops in your blend.

Fennel

Fennel oil is made from fennel seeds and is similar to rosemary. It’s fresh energizing and uplifting. It has antispasmodic, diuretic and stimulating properties and it helps to remove excess fluid, so it is a great oil to use to remove cellulite. It is a great oil to use during or after exercise to help muscles and nerves and it is also stimulating to the mind so it helps with concentration. It’s a great oil to aid your digestion and circulation but this oil should be avoided during pregnancy.
