When I first saw my newborn son I exclaimed that he looked awful because of his flaky, wrinkled skin. I felt better when the nurse said that he was a beautiful baby and the matter on his skin would be gone in a few days. My great-grandmother lived with us at that point and she told me to use olive oil on his skin and that eventually got rid of the flaky stuff. Some hospitals use olive oil on newborns and that is better than a mineral-based oil but some olive oil has gone through a lot of processing and may have been stored for a long period of time.

The best oil to use on your newborn baby’s skin, especially for that first cleaning in the hospital, is composed of 2 tablespoons almond oil with 5 drops of evening primrose oil, plus 3 drops of jojoba oil and 10 drops of wheatgerm oil. This is a mild, odorless oil and hospital staff should have no objection to using it to clean the baby after its birth. This oil can also be used as a massage oil for you and the baby later.
