Essential oils are chosen for their medical properties first and second for their ability to take care of a broad range of health problems. Peppermint has been used by many cultures (Egyptians, Chinese, and American Indians) for thousands of years because of its healthful properties. It has many therapeutic uses and is one of the oils that should be in everyone’s medicine chest. It is a superb digestive, it helps the respiratory system and promotes circulation, it is an anti-inflammatory and it is an antiseptic. These qualities make peppermint oil excellent to use in the treatment of indigestion, flatulence, bad breath, headaches and migraines, skin irritations, toothache, and fatigue. It can also help to keep pests like mice, fleas, and ants away!

My grandson is staying with me for a few weeks this summer and he loves Grandma’s cooking. One evening he ate way too much dinner (I made some of his favorite dishes) and ended up with a stomach ache. When he said he was going to bed early, I knew he had a bad stomach ache so I gave him my treatment for indigestion. First I made him some aromatherapy tea consisting of very warm water, 1 drop of peppermint oil, a pinch of bicarbonate of soda and honey to taste. I had him sip the tea while I blended a massage oil consisting of 1 teaspoon jojoba oil, 2 drops peppermint oil and 3 drops eucalyptus oil. I blended the three ingredients well and massaged his upper abdomen and he went to bed. The next morning he didn’t even remember the stomach ache.
