Spearmint Essential Oil

Author: Dr. Larita

Spearmint flavor is often used for gums and mints because of its cleansing and refreshing taste. It also has therapeutic properties that have been used for centuries. The Greeks used spearmint to scent their bath water and as a restorative oil. In the middle ages, this essential oil was used to heal sore gums and to whiten teeth. We use it in many products today as a flavoring agent and as an aromatic.

Spearmint helps with stomach problems, headaches, respiration, and skin problems. It has a fresh, minty aroma and is invigorating, energizing and a fantastic scent that will revive you when used in a diffuser after a stressful day. It can be used therapeutically for: acne, asthma, bronchitis, colds, flu, dermatitis, fatigue, fever, flatulence (gas), headache, migraines, sinusitis, sore gums, stress and vomiting.

For skin problems, use 2 drops in a carrier oil and dab it on the problem area. For asthma, bronchitis and sinusitis use 2 drops in a diffuser or in a steam inhalation. For colds, fever or flu use 2 or 3 drops on a cold compress for fever and the same amount on a hot compress for colds and flu. Put 8 – 10 drops in bath water to help with colds and flu too. Use 2 or 3 drops of spearmint essential oil in a diffuser in the sickroom to help reenergize the patient. You can also use 10 drops in a plant spray bottle with 2 cups of water and spray the air. For gas, fatigue and stress, use 2 or 3 drops in a diffuser. For gas, you can also use 2 or 3 drops in the steam inhalation method. For headaches, migraines and vomiting, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or steam inhalation. You can massage you temples with 2-3 drops mixed in a carrier oil too. For sore gums, use 2 drops in a cup of water and swish it around in your mouth several times a day.
