Fragrance Oil Gifts

Now is the time of year when people are looking for great gifts to give to friends and relatives for the  holidays. Whether it is for the home or the body, many of us like to give wonderful smelling scents as gifts for Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa. We have previously discussed using essential oils to scent the air with diffusers. Essential oils can also be added to the bath, massaged into the skin, or inhaled directly.

If you are concerned about using natural skin care products, you should use body oils instead of  perfume or cologne. Body oils are designed to be used on your skin. They may or may not contain essential oils. They are often formulations based on the traditional designer brands. When you purchase perfume or cologne in a department store, you  are paying a premium price for the brand name, the advertising campaigns, cosmetics gifts, and the beautiful fancy packaging. These designer brand name perfumes are comprised of concentrated oils and 75% to 85% alcohol, ethanol and or water.

The alcohol and ethanol used make your perfume smell much stronger than it is but it fades within a few hours. As your perfume (or the alcohol in it) evaporates, it not only takes your fragrance but your natural body oils with it, drying your skin as it goes.  Body oils are pure, concentrated perfume oils in a cosmetic grade vegetable oil base that blend in with your body chemistry making the scent your own. They evaporate naturally giving your skin a softer, smoother feeling – plus they contain no alcohol, ethanol or water so many people who are allergic to perfumes and colognes can wear body oils with no problems.

Natural Breast Care II

breast-cancer-2Yesterday we talked about taking care of our breasts by examining them for lumps once a month and stopping the use of commercial deodorants containing aluminum salts. Today, I’m going to give you two essential oil formulas. One is a breast toning massage oil and the other is a soothing formula for sore breasts. For any of you who currently have breast cancer and an impending surgery, use the soothing massage oil before surgery and the toning massage oil after.

If you find a lump in your breast, please do not panic. Many times the lump you find is due to monthly cycle related problems. Of course, you should see your doctor if you find a lump or have breast pain. I do faithfully have my yearly mammogram too. One year after my mammogram I was asked to come back in and have another test because they found three small lumps. After the second test and several days of me agonizing about it, they found that it was just some extra fluid in my mammary glands and nothing to worry about.

There is no room in this blog for me to tell you about the firming and toning exercises you can do for your breasts but you can find that out at your local YWCA. After excercising, massage your breast area in a circular pattern once a day with the toning massage oil. If your breasts are sore for any reason, use the soothing massage oil in the same pattern. For both formulas, combine the essential oils and add them to 2 tablespoons of a good carrier oil like sweet almond, jojoba, grape seed or liquid shea oil.

  • Geranium – 8 drops
  • Lemongrass – 10 drops
  • Clary-sage – 5 drops
  • Carrot – 5 drops

  • Chamomile Roman – 10 drops
  • Geranium – 5 drops
  • Lavender – 10 drops
  • Carrot – 5 drops

Breast Cancer Prevention

breast-cancerThis is a repeated blog because I believe it is so important to remind us women often to take care of ourselves. I don’t think I can remind you often enough. I just had my yearly mammogram this month and a couple days after the exam, the doctor’s office called and scheduled me to come back in for a 3-D exam to rule out that a shadow showing on the test was not cancer. It wasn’t but it sure got my attention!

Have you ever found a lump in your breast? Last month I saw what looked like a bruise on my left breast and it was sore to the touch. I had just had a mammogram two months before that so I was not worried about the bruise until I felt the lump. I told my husband about it and he said, “just call the doctor.”

I went to work the next day and worried about the lump the whole time I was there. I had a doctor’s appointment that afternoon so afterwards, I went to the mammography clinic at a nearby hospital and almost lost it when the assistant said yes, I should go to the doctor even after a recent mammogram. She assured me that most lumps are nothing and to try not to worry, just make that appointment. Luckily, my doctor saw me right away and I did find out that it was just fibrous tissue and I don’t have cancer. At that point, I started looking for alternative health strategies for breast issues and there are many.

As I’ve said before, the best medicine is prevention so always do your monthly breast exam. When you’ve done that, you should firm and tone your breasts. To exercise the pectoral muscles, grip opposite hands or wrists and push your arms together so they are pushing against each other, thus exercising the pecs. Then massage the whole breast area in a circular motion once a day. Use the following formula for this massage oil: combine 5 drops geranium, 10 drops lemongrass, 5 drops parsley seed, 5 drops carrot oil and 5 drops clary-sage. Add this mixture to 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil.

Oregano for Cold Symptoms

We all know that oregano is used as a flavoring for spaghetti and pizza but that is usually the dried and crushed leaves instead of the essential oil. According to Wikipedia, Hippocrates used oregano as an antiseptic, as well as a cure for stomach and respiratory ailments. Oregano is still used today in Greece as a palliative for sore throat.

Oregano is high in antioxidants because of its phenolic acids and flavonoids. It also has shown antimicrobial activity against strains of food-borne pathogens. The Complete Book of Essential Oils & Aromatherapy by Valerie Ann Worwood lists oregano several times as one of the  essential oils to use for respiratory problems such as coughs, sinusitis and influenza.

My main reason for writing about oregano essential oil today is anecdotal. We went to lunch with some friends and the topic of essential oils came up. One of our friends said that he had been using some over the counter medicines for a cold that kept lingering when he was told to try oregano essential oil. He says that he was so tired of feeling bad that he put 5 or 6 drops of oregano on his tongue and he felt better almost instantly. While that was distressing to me because I don’t think you should take essential oils by mouth without diluting them, I think I will try oregano essential oil the next time I start feeling like I’m coming down with a cough, sore throat or a cold.

2532163_origMy sister recently became very interested in the benefits of aromatherapy. She’s been telling me a lot about her experiences with it and says that even she was surprised by the results she’s gotten in regards to her mood and mental clarity. She has all these different essential oils at her home and oil diffusers, which apparently are one of the most important aspects of aromatherapy.

Her interest in aromatherapy has piqued my curiosity and she got me some aromatherapy gifts for my birthday after I told her that I was interested but didn’t really know where to start. She got me an oil diffuser and a couple of her favorite essential oils and instructed me on how to properly use them to get the most benefits out of aromatherapy.

Inhalation Aromatherapy

coldDo you feel a cold coming on? Do you already have a miserable cold and feel stuffy? Aromatherapy inhalation is a method of using essential oils that will help you tremendously. All you do is add a few drops of essential oil to hot water to make a therapeutic steam. Inhaling this steam will help to open your airways and improve your breathing during colds, flu, hay fever and sinusitis. The essential oil travels up your nose through the vapor and then the tiny molecules of essential oil help to loosen blockages and sooth mucous membranes in your nasal passages. As you breath deeply and breathing becomes easier, the essential oil vapor travels farther down the respiratory passages toward your lungs. This will ease your cough and tight chest.

It is easy to do an aromatherapy inhalation at home. Half fill a heatproof bowl with near boiling water. Remove your glasses or contact lenses, add up to a total of 6 drops of essential oil to the hot water, lean over the fragrant steam with a towel draped over your head and the bowl. Lift the towel every 2 to 3 minutes so you don’t become uncomfortable. Breathe slowly, deeply and steadily so the aromatic fragrance enters your nose and lungs for up to 15 minutes. You will feel the essential oils clearing your head and nose, bringing a feeling of lightness and relief.

These inhalation blends are safe for all adults except those with asthma. If you have asthma, these may be too strong for you and you should not use inhalations. Instead, you should take an aromatherapy bath to ease your breathing.

  • To ease a stuffy head, use 3 drops eucalyptus and 3 drops pine
  • To unblock the nose, use 3 drops peppermint and 3 drops oregano
  • To sooth the throat and chest, use 3 drops cedar wood and 3 drops frankincense
  • To help ease a chest infection, use 3 drops tea tree and 3 drops lemon
