How to Treat Injuries

If you have an injury that can be treated at home, oneĀ method you can use is heat. When you put heat on an injury or a sore part of the body it dilates the capillaries and increases your blood flow. The increased blood nourishes the tissue and this can speed the healing process, reduce muscular spasms and reduce your pain. Unfortunately, applying heat carries the risk of letting blood and plasma seep into the injured area and prolong the healing process. For this reason, it is important that you do not apply heat for at least 12 hours after the injury.

Another method you can use isĀ cold. Cold causes the small capillaries to contract and this decreases the amount of blood that collects around the wound. This can also prolong the healing process. The good thing about using cold though is that it reduces bruising, swelling, pain and inflammation.

The RICE method is often used with sports injuries. Rice means rest, ice, compress, and elevation which are the steps you should take to treat an injury needing care. Resting the injury insures that no additional injury takes place. Ice can be applied in a number of different methods. Whichever method you choose, apply the ice 20 minutes, rest 20 minutes and repeat this for 3 to 4 hours. We will continue this discussion.
