People have been using grapefruit essential oil for centuries to help support both a healthy inflammation response and a healthy weight. It helps overcome sugar cravings and also hangover symptoms. It is a versatile essential oil with a clean, fresh scent and like the fruit itself it has a hint of bitter. It is often used in natural household cleansers and homemade body care and cosmetics like lotions, soaps and shampoos.

Seven Uses for Grapefruit Essential Oil

  1. Healthy weight management – add  2 drops to water, smoothies or a sparkling beverage.  When a craving strikes, massage the oil onto the chest and wrists.
  2. Food cravings – grapefruit oil has been proven to lower sugar cravings and help kick the sugar habit when inhaled.  Add a couple drops to a cotton ball with a little bit of coconut oil and rub it on your wrists, neck or chest. You can also inhale it directly from your bottle or using a nasal inhaler.
  3. Lymphatic health – grapefruit oil is a natural diuretic and lymphatic stimulant making it great for getting rid of excess water weight. It also rids the body of toxins and excess salt. Take 1 or 2 drops internally or massage it topically over the kidneys.
  4. Digestive health and detoxification – Use a homemade massage lotion with grapefruit and jojoba oil to rub over your stomach. This will increase blood to the digestive organs and help with detoxification. It also helps with digestion.
  5. Fungal balance – grapefruit essential oil is anti-fungal and can help keep a healthy yeast and bacteria balance in the body. Diffuse 5 drops or take 1-2 drops internally.
  6. Air freshener – Get rid of nasty odors by diffusing grapefruit oil together with other citrus oils like lemon, orange or bergamot. Use grapefruit oil on wooden surfaces, countertops, floors  or in your vacuum to stop bacteria in its tracks and to mask odor.
  7. Appearance of “cottage cheese” skin – grapefruit oil supports a healthy response to inflammation and increase blood flow and that may lessen the appearance of “cottage cheese” skin on certain parts of the body. Rub a blend of coconut oil and grapefruit oil onto those areas of concern daily.

There is a wide variation in the age when babies begin teething but whenever they start, teething may cause inflammation and soreness of the gums, runny nose, runny stool and often fever as well. It’s important to give the baby something to chew on at this time but do not give him anything he can choke on. Teething is often wrongly blamed for any and every symptom a baby can get so it is important to stay aware of your baby’s condition at this stage.

The essential oil formula for teething is chamomile – 6 drops or lavender – 5 drops diluted in 5 teaspoons sweet almond oil and mixed well. Then take 1 teaspoon of the oil mix and put it in a small container. Fill with ice-cold water and stir very well. Now you have two mixtures for a two-part treatment. First,  dip a cotton ball into the cold water and oil mixture and gently wipe around baby’s gums. Then using just the oil mix, massage around the outside of baby’s face along the jawline. You only need to use a couple of drops of the oil mix each time; just rub a little between your fingers before applying.

Sickness and Vomiting

Babies who are constantly being sick and vomiting may very well be allergic to cow’s milk so consult your doctor who may prescribe a soy milk product. If your baby is not allergic to cow’s milk but continues to throw up, they can be treated effectively with peppermint oil which calms the stomach and makes digestion easier. Put one drop on a cotton ball and place the cotton ball in the baby’s bed at the opposite end of the baby’s head.

If your baby keeps you awake all night, this remedy can be used every other night until he or she has learned to sleep through the night. When you put the baby to bed, put a bowl of boiling water beneath the bed on the floor not directly under the baby’s head. Add 1 drop chamomile and 1 drop of geranium oil to the boiling water. Keep the door to baby’s room almost closed (not all the way) to keep the aroma molecules in baby’s room. After a few alternate days of this treatment, your baby will start to conserve his energy and sleep during the night.

I am often running from one place to another and some of my days are super busy. I literally am doing one task after another from the time that I get up to the time that I am going to bed without any free time in between. It can get hard to get through a busy day and I often feel really stressed out and like I can’t stop to even take a breath.

It is nice to have some good essential oils to help me to keep my focus and to not let my emotions and my stress get to me. Sometimes I just feel like giving up if I am trying to get a lot done but if I push through it, it always ends up being really rewarding. It is nice to have some great essential oils to get me through a busy day.

Getting some nice aromatherapy in with my essential oils is really great and I love having the oils to ensure that I am staying in a great mood and not letting my stress overwhelm me. I have a nice essential oil diffuser at work and I have some great oils all throughout my home as well. The oils are a nice way for me to stay calm and keep a good balance.

Essential Oils for Baby

Author: Dr. Larita

Do not use an essential oil on a baby until it is at least 24 hours old and even then, only if you have good reason to use it. One good reason is dry and wrinkled skin which many babies have after being in amniotic fluid for nine months and especially if they were overdue or induced. When my first daughter was born, she was absolutely beautiful with lots of curly hair and smooth, clear skin. When my second daughter was born 18 months later I was expecting the same beautiful little angel but she had red splotches and thin straight hair!

If your baby is born with skin problems or develops them early on, you can have a synergistic essential oil blend ready to treat it right away.

  • Wrinkled skin – Mix 8 drops chamomile and 1 drop lavender then put 3 drops of this mixture in 2 tablespoons of the carrier oil mixture of almond oil, evening primrose oil and jojoba oil discussed earlier.
  • Diaper rash – 1 drop chamomile and 1 drop lavender. When you wash baby’s bottom, use a cotton ball dipped in a bowl of 1-pint warm water with one drop of your diaper rash blend added. Swish the water around well first. Use a clean cotton ball each time until the baby is clean and then dry baby’s bottom. Add 1 drop of your essential oil blend to 4 teaspoons of a castor oil cream and zinc mixture. If you have stored your synergistic blend in an amber glass bottle, you can just mix one drop in with 2 teaspoons of the cream and store this in a small sterile container (pill box) and use as necessary.
  • Cradle cap – Mix 1 drop eucalyptus/lemon oil and 1 drop geranium oil and add it to 2 tablespoons of almond oil and shake well. Apply very gently to the scalp with your fingertips avoiding baby’s soft spot. Use this formula once a day until the cradle cap goes away.

If you are pregnant and want to use pure and natural essential oils to keep your baby in good health and treat him or her when necessary for illness, you should start looking now for appropriate small containers to keep the baby’s various creams and lotions in. Your essential oils will come in small brown glass bottles but you will also need tiny pots or pillboxes that have been washed and sterilized. When the baby’s here and you need an essential oil remedy, you don’t want to have to run around looking for a container for the very small quantities you will use.

The essential oils to use for newborn babies are dill, chamomile, or lavender and only in one of two different methods. The first method is to place a bowl of steaming water on the floor in baby’s room, away from the baby’s head. Add 1 drop of essential oil to the steaming water so that it fills the room as it rises with the steam. Do not use more than one drop of essential oil added to a pint of water.

The other way to use essential oils in the baby’s room is to add it to a glazed surface diffuser. Do not use the natural-looking porous clay type of diffuser with babies and children because you need to be able to clean the diffuser thoroughly and that is not possible with clay diffusers. Even one single drop of essential oil added neat to a diffuser is too much for babies. You must add 1 drop of oil to 2 teaspoons of water, mix well and then add a little of this mixture to the diffuser bowl.

Use dill essential oil if your baby is ill with any kind of digestive problem,  such as colic, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea, or regurgitation. If the baby has trouble sleeping, use chamomile in the diffuser. Use lavender essential oil to clean up the air in baby’s room and make it smell pleasant. Lavender is also exceptional for its antibiotic, antiseptic, disinfectant and antiviral properties. Even though you only use 1 drop diluted in water in the baby’s diffuser, the fragrance will be lovely and much better for the baby than chemical air fresheners that you can buy for the nursery.

I love to keep my skin looking as smooth and soft as possible. I love it when my skin has a natural and beautiful glow to it and I want my skin to look youthful and healthy for as long as possible. Using the right skin care products like a good moisturizer helps me to ensure that my skin stays looking its best and that I can feel confident every day.

I used to really struggle with dry and cracked skin and it really made me feel insecure. People would sometimes comment on my skin when it got so dry that it cracked. I would get little cuts all over my hands in the wintertime because of how dry my skin got and I never seemed to be able to find a product that kept that dryness away.

Now that I have discovered the power of natural moisturizers, I no longer have to worry about having dry skin or skin that is dull. I love what these moisturizers have done for my skin and my natural beauty. I no longer feel tightness from dry skin on my face or have to worry about peeling skin and the aged look that dry skin gives you.
