Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage or aromassage is an excellent way to apply essential oils as part of an alternative healing process. It is not hard to do and anyone can do it to family, friends, even to yourself. There are many different ways to apply aromassage:

  • Effleurage – this is a series of gentle, soothing strokes which allow essential oils to penetrate your body and help you to relax and become calm. For this method, use your whole hands in either long or short strokes that can be either firm or gentle.
  • Petrissage – is similar to gently kneading dough. Use the palm, fingertips and thumbs to slowly and gently knead the body. Petrissage is most helpful when used on fatty areas and on backs.
  • Head massage – put the essential oils on your fingertips to massage the scalp. Work the fingers all over the scalp.
  • For a migraine and headaches – massage around the base of the neck and work your way up to the base of the scalp. Massage in this manner for a few moments with firm effleurage strokes.
  • For the neck – massage the neck using small, firm circular movements from the base of the neck, up either side of the vertebrae to the base of the scalp. Massage the sides of the neck and repeat these movements in a more gentle fashion and work your way down the neck. Repeat several times using appropriate essential oils.

essential oils for coldsMany essential oils have anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. If you have a humidifier in your home to keep the air from getting dry, you can add essential oils to the water. Another way to use them is to inhale them directly to treat any respiratory problems you may have. There are five essential oils that are awesome for treating respiratory problems.

  • Clove oil can be used in a home-made gargle by adding a few drops to a cup of warm water and gargling. Clove oil has a cooling effect and anti-inflammatory properties and this will sooth your sore throat.
  • Peppermint is a great essential oil to use as an expectorant and decongestant so it will really sooth a dry cough and sore throat. Simply add a few drops to a cup of hot water and sip. Rub a few drops on the back of the neck or on the bottom of the feet and any fever you have will simply vanish. Peppermint is also good for eliminating the headache that so often accompanies a cold.
  • Oregano is called a “natural antibiotic”.  It is very strong so only use 2-4 drops in a glass of water to eliminate sore throat and sinus infections.
  • Eucalyptus has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-viral, expectorant, antibiotic, decongestant and many more properties that make it an exceptional essential oil to use during the cold and flu season. Eucalyptus oil can be used to fight tuberculosis and it can have an antimicrobial effect on all kinds of bacteria and viruses. It is also known to cure bronchitis and asthma.
  • Juniper berry oil also has great anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. For bronchitis, add a few drops of juniper to your vaporizer for a very soothing effect. For deep chest colds, use a combination of juniper oil mixed with eucalyptus in an inhalation therapy treatment for an even better result.

 


 

Essential oils are used by many cultures throughout the world for their healing properties. Some uses for the oils include increasing over-all well being and physical, emotional and mental health. Many essential oils can also stimulate the sex drive and work as powerful aphrodisiacs. So those looking to spice up their love lives this Valentine’s Day should consider filling their oil diffusers with one of the following essential oils:

~Ylang Ylang oil energizes the body and intensifies sexual desire.

~Rose oil aids in hormone balance. This oil works best for women, but is also said to boost sexuality in men.

~Jasmine oil is said to have a counter-effect on frigidity, impotence and premature ejaculation. It also boosts energy levels.

~Sandalwood oil is said to aid in the treatment of impotence and help to relieve the anxiety that leads to frigidity. It also produces something similar to androsterone, a male hormone secreted in the armpits as a sexual signal.


Aromatherapy Diffusers

We have discussed four ways to use aromatherapy as an alternative health care method and two of those ways, aerial diffusion and direct inhalation, are aided by the use of a diffuser. There are many different kinds of diffusers for you to investigate but their purpose is to get the essential oil aroma into the air.

The main difference in aromatherapy diffusers is the way in which they disperse the scent into the air.  A home diffuser uses ultrasonic technology to emit oils into the air and they cover more territory than a two or three part soapstone burner. The smaller diffusers are perfect for covering the area in a sickroom, office, bedroom, or bathroom. Some diffusers use electricity to heat the oils while others use tea light candles or a small light bulb.


If you have been reading Natural Body Guru, you have read quite a bit about essential oils. Occasionally, I like to remind my readers of the different methods one can use to enjoy aromatherapy essential oils in the home. Aromatherapy is an alternative form of medicine that uses essential oils or volatile liquid from plant materials and certain aromatic compounds. Basically, the essential oils have an effect on an individual’s health or mood.

There are four different modes of application for aromatherapy essential oils:

  • Aerial diffusion for aerial disinfection or environmental fragrancing
  • Direct inhalation for respiratory decongestion, expectoration, and disinfection
  • Topical applications for body compresses, baths, and therapeutic care for the skin or general massage
  • Oral applications for congestion and parasites

Aromatherapy to the Rescue II

Therapeutic grade essential oils are mainly concentrated flowers, plants, and herbs. People are missing out on their health benefits because of the misconception that they are only for elevating mood or to be used as perfume oils. Numerous essential oils also have properties that kill germs, purify the air and have antibiotic, antiviral and antifungal properties. They can rescue and protect us from every ailment between acne and urinary tract infections.

If you would like to add additional essential oils to the basic three we discussed in a previous post, you may wish to include rosemary, peppermint, orange, geranium and lemon. Your aromatherapy rescue kit should also include carrier oils such as almond oil, jojoba oil, or shea oil in which your essential oils can be diluted. You can also include aloe vera, vitamin E and garlic oil. Create your own garlic oil by mixing garlic cloves with sweet almond or grape seed oil.


Shea Butter – Women’s Gold

Another name for shea butter is “women’s gold” because the job of  extracting the butter from shea nuts gives employment and income to many rural African village women. Shea butter is used in foods and cooking as well as soaps and beauty products because it is so safe and beneficial. It also contains natural ingredients that protect skin from the sun.

African women and healers have known about and used shea butter for thousands of years. Its properties are so amazing it is almost magical in its healing effects on burns, skin conditions, ulcerated skin, stretch marks, and dryness. The vegetable fats in shea butter promote cell regeneration and circulation making it a superb revitalizer for troubled or aging skin. I have been using it for years and no one believes me when I tell them how old I am.


Shea Butter

Shea butter is a yellowish or ivory colored natural fat that comes from the seed of the African shea tree. Extracting shea butter from the seed is a social activity for African women elders and young girls who crush and boil the seeds by hand.  Shea butter is used in Africa for cooking oil, as a waterproofing wax, for hairdressing, for candle-making, and also as an ingredient of medicinal ointments.

The main industrial use of shea butter outside Africa is in cosmetics, such as moisturizer creams and emulsions, and in hair conditioners for dry and brittle hair. This versatile cream can be used to correct many skin conditions which we’ll discuss in a later post.


Why Use Essential Oil Diffusers?

Aromatherapy has been proven to elevate the mood, relax the senses, and even relieve various ailments such as a headache and colds. For these reasons, it has been used by many spas worldwide. More and more people are enjoying the effects of aromatherapy.

With the use of essential oil diffusers, a spa can be kept fragrant for hours. All it takes is a few drops of essential oil in water and your place will smell relaxing and soothing. Diffusers may come in different designs and styles.


Muscle Fatigue Essential Oils

If you have been doing a lot of shopping recently, you may be suffering from muscle fatigue when you wake up in the morning. Rosemary essential oil is a great one to use during your morning shower because it is a mental and physical stimulant and also during a relaxing bath after a long strenuous day because it is an excellent treatment for all muscular conditions. Rosemary has antiseptic properties and is often used to treat muscular sprains, rheumatism, arthritis, depression, fatigue, memory loss, migraine headaches, coughs, flu, and diabetes. It is also used in beauty treatments, hair care products, and acne preparations.

If you are one of those unfortunate people who has a case of continuous muscle fatigue or myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), you may be helped by using this muscle fatigue formula: 5 drops of thyme essential oil, 10 drops rosemary, 5 drops cypress, 10 drops eucalyptus/peppermint essential oil, diluted in 2 tablespoons of grapeseed oil. You can use any other carrier oil but grapeseed oil is very light to the touch.

It is important that ME sufferers get enough sleep but many times, because of their aching muscles, they have insomnia so they are extremely tired and yet they can’t sleep. The essential oils to use for insomnia are valerian, marjoram, chamomile, clary-sage, sandalwood, and lemon. Massage any of these oils into your body before having an oil bath. Use any of the above mentioned oils in a blend of a total of 30 drops to 2 tablespoons of carrier oil. Massage this over your whole body while you run a warm bath. Then put 4 drops of any essential oil from the list into the bath and swish it around before getting in. Rest in the water or read a book until the water starts to cool and then go to bed. Do this nightly to help with your insomnia.
