How would you like to get rid of that nagging headache without taking over the counter medicines? All you need to do is inhale peppermint infused steam. Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, a compound that relaxes muscle spasms in the scalp and also calms pain nerves.  Breathing in the peppermint steam can open sinus blood vessels, improve drainage and also reduce painful pressure. All you need to do is mix 8 drops of peppermint essential into 4 cups of hot water, and then lean over the pot with a towel over your head and breathe deeply for 10 minutes.

aromatherapybathSage has been considered a sacred herb and a cure for many ailments for hundreds of years. It eventually found its way into the kitchen as a flavoring for meats and other dishes. As an aromatic, sage has a wide variety of therapeutic uses on a continuum from promoting respiratory health to strengthening memory.

Sage is used extensively in perfumes and colognes, especially in men’s fragrances. It can also be found in soaps, antiperspirants, detergents, mouthwashes, gargles and toothpastes. To top it all off, sage is also a source of natural antioxidants but ingesting it by mouth is discouraged. Even though you should not drink sage essential oil, there are many therapeutic uses for it.

Sage Essential Oil Applications

  • To bring back appetite, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser.
  • For arthritis, strained muscles and rheumatism, use 2-3 drops in one ounce of liquid shea butter and massage it on affected areas.
  • For colds, bronchitis and other respiratory ailments, use 2-3 drops in steam inhalation or in a diffuser.
  • For constipation, use 8-10 drops in your bath water.
  • To relieve fluid retention, use 2-3 drops in sweet almond oil and massage it on the affected areas or use 8-10 drops in bath water.
  • For flatulence, use 2-3 drops in steam inhalation or a diffuser.
  • To fight low blood pressure, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser of steam inhalation regularly.
  • To ease the discomforts of menopause – hot flashes, night sweats, nerves – use 2-3 drops nightly in a diffuser.
  • To help with scanty periods and painful menstruation, use 8-10 drops in your bath water.
  • To bring back a sense of balance and calmness after trauma, especially if it continues to bother you after a long period of time, (commonly known as post traumatic stress syndrome) use 2-3 drops in a diffuser nightly until a sense of balance is restored.

Yesterday I talked about aromatherapy for the hot flashes that are common when menopause strikes. Unfortunately, hot flashes are not the only symptom that assail the body during menopause. Today I want to give you some formulas for a few of the other ailments that menopausal women and some men deal with daily.

Day & Night Sweats Formula

  • 10 drops grapefruit
  • 10 drops lime
  • 5 drops sage
  • 5 drops thyme

Water Retention & Bloating Formula

  • 5 drops fennel
  • 5 drops juniper
  • 15 drops lemon
  • 5 drops peppermint

Circulatory Problems Formula

  • 10 drops geranium
  • 5 drops peppermint
  • 10 drops rose
  • 5 drops patchouli

For all of these formulas you can blend the essential oils and then dilute the synergistic blend in 2 tablespoons of a carrier oil like evening primrose or sweet almond oil. You can also use the synergistic blend on a 5 to 1 basis as a massage oil. Either way, massage the formula all over your body and use 5 drops in a daily bath.

hot flashThe first time I got a hot flash, I was talking to a fellow music teacher and I suddenly got very hot and sweaty. My office was usually cold and I was always freezing so when John saw me fanning myself he asked me what was wrong. I hadn’t considered hot flashes but he had seen his wife go through the same changes so he said it must be one of those hot flashes. Well, that was embarrassing but it didn’t stop me from fanning myself.

You can take hormone replacement therapy or other chemical medications if you want but I don’t like to take anything that might cause other side effects. There is no need to anyway because there are much safer ways to help yourself in these situations. Eating nutritious foods, cooking with cold-pressed cooking oils, taking vitamins and using evening primrose oil are all very helpful. Essential oils are also very helpful with menopause.

Hot Flashes Synergistic Blend

  • 10 drops clary-sage
  • 11 drops geranium
  • 7 drops lemon
  • 2 drops sage

Dilute these oils in 4 teaspoons of carrier oil (evening primrose would be an additional help for hot flashes) and massage all over your body with 1 teaspoon at a time. You can also use 5 drops in your bath anytime you wish.

3212291446_c0888961e0It wasn’t as much of a problem when I was younger but gradually I’ve noticed that I have some problems with my feet. The skin on the bottom of my feet – especially on the bottom of my toes – tends to get really dry very quickly. Sometimes it will even get so dry that it starts to crack and that can be painful depending on the circumstances and what kind of shoes I’m wearing.

Lately, however, I’ve found a way to help myself not have to deal with this issue. I’ve started using a moisturizing foot cream that helps keep my feet from drying out as badly as they had been. Ever since I started using these creams, my feet have stopped cracking and there’s been no bleeding and they just feel a lot better in general, which is a relief.

You can have healthy teeth and gums without using commercial toothpaste that may contain harmful chemicals and preservatives. Many primitive societies had pearly white teeth and healthy gums without using toothpaste. They used certain sticks and rock salt to make a very effective dental cleanser. Essential oils can provide a natural alternative to commercial toothpastes, of course, it also helps if you steer clear of sweets!

You can make an effective tooth powder with the following ingredients:

  • 4 teaspoons green or white clay
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops lemon essential oil

Mix the above ingredients well in a blender and store in a box. Dip your toothbrush into the powder and wet it with a tiny amount of water, then brush as usual.

Myrrh essential oil can be used to treat mouth problems and also to keep your gums healthy. Make a myrrh mouthwash  by adding 2 drops of myrrh essential to 1 tablespoon of vodka and mix well. Add only 2 drops of this to each glass of water you use to rinse the mouth.

Here is another tooth powder formula that also helps keep your teeth white:

  • 1 tablespoon ground, dried orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons ground, dried sage
  • 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil
  • 1 drop peppermint essential oil

If you have gum problems, you can add 15 drops of tincture of myrrh (purchase at your drug store) into which you have added 1 drop of myrrh essential oil to your tooth powder recipe. Mix this well in a blender and store in a box. Use it the same way as the tooth powder recipe above and here’s to a naturally bright smile!

Fighting Signs of Age

I’ve gotten to that age where my skin, weight, and energy levels don’t bounce back like they used to when I was in my early 20s. It seems like every morning I wake up to find a new wrinkle or line that hadn’t been there when I went to bed. To help fight the signs of aging, I’ve started a new skincare regimen.

For starters, I’ve switched to a gentler cleanser. The cleansers and toners I used as a teenager to ban acne are just too harsh for my older, more fragile skin. I’ve also found the best anti-aging skincare moisturizer and eye cream. I slather them on liberally at night so the nutrients can soak in while the skin naturally goes into repair mode. In the morning, I cleanse my face again and put on a lightweight moisturizer with SPF 15 to protect from sun damage.

Do You Have Backne?

Acne always seems to crop up when we least expect it and “backne” (acne on the back) usually comes when we’re stressed and at the most inconvenient times too, like prom time or sundress time. What can we do about backne?  We can eat right, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and exercise regularly to help control breakouts.

When you get hot and sweaty it is important to shower to prevent your pores from becoming clogged. Use an acne-fighting soap for your back and make sure that you exfoliate gently on a regular basis.  Then use a good moisturizer on your back to help clear up acne and treat dry skin.

At Home Facials

Pampering yourself can be easy and affordable when you use what you already have to create luxurious and beneficial facial masks. Mix up a mask that meets your skin’s needs, and then plan on kicking back and relaxing. You might consider a cup of hot chamomile tea or a hot foot soak to go along with your at-home spa theme.

Dry Skin: Mash one banana and add five tablespoons of ground oats and a tablespoon of honey. Apply to damp skin and leave on for about twenty minutes. Rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

Oily Skin: Mix one egg white, half a cucumber and one drop of a mixture of one drop lavender essential oil and one drop rosemary essential oil in a food processor or blender and then refrigerate for about twenty minutes. This mask can be left on for fifteen to twenty minutes. Rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

Blemished Skin: Mix chopped tomato, a tablespoon of instant oatmeal and a teaspoon of lemon juice in a blender until mixed. Let mask stay on skin for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

Tired Skin: Mash five ripe strawberries, a few teaspoons of heavy whipping cream and a teaspoon of honey together an apply to face. Leave on for half an hour and rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

My daughter paid off her car loan (big celebration) and asked me to go pick up her title from the dealer because she no longer lives here. I was just going to run in and run out but you know what happens to the best laid plans. I asked for the papers and the receptionist was looking them up but couldn’t find them so the office manager came over and started to help. He told me they were serving sandwiches to their customers today and asked me to go make myself a sandwich while they did a little digging for the correct papers. While I was making a turkey  sandwich with all the fixings, the receptionist got a call from her son.

She and the office manager started discussing teenaged children and the receptionist said she remembers what she was doing at the same age her daughter is now and she is very worried because her son had just called to tell her that her daughter had invited her boyfriend over while mom was at work. I told her I had more problems like that with my girls than I ever had with my son. The office manager said he only has a 12 year old son and his biggest problem so far is that his skin just started  breaking out with pimples. You know I had to put my two cents in about skin problems. I told him to get his son some Dudu-Osun African Black Soap and also some shea butter so he can get rid of the pimples. He surprised me by saying  he wanted to get him some natural products instead of the ones with the expensive commercials and infomercials because he thinks natural products are better for you. I was all set to go into the whys and wherefores but I didn’t have to, he already knew about our natural products. You should try it too if you have any problems with your skin.
