How would you like to get rid of that nagging headache without taking over the counter medicines? All you need to do is inhale peppermint infused steam. Peppermint essential oil contains menthol, a compound that relaxes muscle spasms in the scalp and also calms pain nerves.  Breathing in the peppermint steam can open sinus blood vessels, improve drainage and also reduce painful pressure. All you need to do is mix 8 drops of peppermint essential into 4 cups of hot water, and then lean over the pot with a towel over your head and breathe deeply for 10 minutes.

You can have healthy teeth and gums without using commercial toothpaste that may contain harmful chemicals and preservatives. Many primitive societies had pearly white teeth and healthy gums without using toothpaste. They used certain sticks and rock salt to make a very effective dental cleanser. Essential oils can provide a natural alternative to commercial toothpastes, of course, it also helps if you steer clear of sweets!

You can make an effective tooth powder with the following ingredients:

  • 4 teaspoons green or white clay
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 2 drops lemon essential oil

Mix the above ingredients well in a blender and store in a box. Dip your toothbrush into the powder and wet it with a tiny amount of water, then brush as usual.

Myrrh essential oil can be used to treat mouth problems and also to keep your gums healthy. Make a myrrh mouthwash  by adding 2 drops of myrrh essential to 1 tablespoon of vodka and mix well. Add only 2 drops of this to each glass of water you use to rinse the mouth.

Here is another tooth powder formula that also helps keep your teeth white:

  • 1 tablespoon ground, dried orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons ground, dried sage
  • 2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 drops lemon essential oil
  • 1 drop peppermint essential oil

If you have gum problems, you can add 15 drops of tincture of myrrh (purchase at your drug store) into which you have added 1 drop of myrrh essential oil to your tooth powder recipe. Mix this well in a blender and store in a box. Use it the same way as the tooth powder recipe above and here’s to a naturally bright smile!

Fighting Signs of Age

I’ve gotten to that age where my skin, weight, and energy levels don’t bounce back like they used to when I was in my early 20s. It seems like every morning I wake up to find a new wrinkle or line that hadn’t been there when I went to bed. To help fight the signs of aging, I’ve started a new skincare regimen.

For starters, I’ve switched to a gentler cleanser. The cleansers and toners I used as a teenager to ban acne are just too harsh for my older, more fragile skin. I’ve also found the best anti-aging skincare moisturizer and eye cream. I slather them on liberally at night so the nutrients can soak in while the skin naturally goes into repair mode. In the morning, I cleanse my face again and put on a lightweight moisturizer with SPF 15 to protect from sun damage.

Do You Have Backne?

Acne always seems to crop up when we least expect it and “backne” (acne on the back) usually comes when we’re stressed and at the most inconvenient times too, like prom time or sundress time. What can we do about backne?  We can eat right, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and exercise regularly to help control breakouts.

When you get hot and sweaty it is important to shower to prevent your pores from becoming clogged. Use an acne-fighting soap for your back and make sure that you exfoliate gently on a regular basis.  Then use a good moisturizer on your back to help clear up acne and treat dry skin.

Pampering yourself can be easy and affordable when you use what you already have to create luxurious and beneficial facial masks. Mix up a mask that meets your skin’s needs, and then plan on kicking back and relaxing. You might consider a cup of hot chamomile tea or a hot foot soak to go along with your at-home spa theme.

Dry Skin: Mash one banana and add five tablespoons of ground oats and a tablespoon of honey. Apply to damp skin and leave on for about twenty minutes. Rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

Oily Skin: Mix one egg white, half a cucumber and one drop of a mixture of one drop lavender essential oil and one drop rosemary essential oil in a food processor or blender and then refrigerate for about twenty minutes. This mask can be left on for fifteen to twenty minutes. Rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

Blemished Skin: Mix chopped tomato, a tablespoon of instant oatmeal and a teaspoon of lemon juice in a blender until mixed. Let mask stay on skin for ten to fifteen minutes. Rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

Tired Skin: Mash five ripe strawberries, a few teaspoons of heavy whipping cream and a teaspoon of honey together an apply to face. Leave on for half an hour and rinse off with warm water, blot dry, and apply a good moisturizer.

My daughter paid off her car loan (big celebration) and asked me to go pick up her title from the dealer because she no longer lives here. I was just going to run in and run out but you know what happens to the best laid plans. I asked for the papers and the receptionist was looking them up but couldn’t find them so the office manager came over and started to help. He told me they were serving sandwiches to their customers today and asked me to go make myself a sandwich while they did a little digging for the correct papers. While I was making a turkey  sandwich with all the fixings, the receptionist got a call from her son.

She and the office manager started discussing teenaged children and the receptionist said she remembers what she was doing at the same age her daughter is now and she is very worried because her son had just called to tell her that her daughter had invited her boyfriend over while mom was at work. I told her I had more problems like that with my girls than I ever had with my son. The office manager said he only has a 12 year old son and his biggest problem so far is that his skin just started  breaking out with pimples. You know I had to put my two cents in about skin problems. I told him to get his son some Dudu-Osun African Black Soap and also some shea butter so he can get rid of the pimples. He surprised me by saying  he wanted to get him some natural products instead of the ones with the expensive commercials and infomercials because he thinks natural products are better for you. I was all set to go into the whys and wherefores but I didn’t have to, he already knew about our natural products. You should try it too if you have any problems with your skin.

poolWork has been stressful lately. It’s usually very demanding and I put in a lot of hours so I can get some quality work done. I love what I do though and I’m very good at what I do. The long hours and the heightened stress levels are just something that I’ve gotten used to. My friends tell me that I need to get a better work-life balance so I don’t end up in an early grave. I think they might be right.

I’ve been finding activities to do that would relieve some of my stress levels. I go to a day spa once a month with some friends and we get massages and facials. I usually feel very relaxed afterwards. A friend of mine also got me some bath oils so I can take a nice, relaxing bath in my home at least once a week. One of my other friends also suggested that I do more physical activity, like hiking, to help relieve some stress. I think all these activities will have a positive effect on my life. I’m down to do anything that would balance out my life more.

This is the third in a series of blogs discussing how to use essential oils for aromatherapy. So far, we have talked about body and water methods but today, I’m going to talk about ways to use them throughout a room.

Room Methods

  • Candles – use 1-2 drops.  Light the candle and when the wax starts to melt, add the oils to the melted wax. Be careful not to get the oils on the wick because they are inflammable.
  • Diffusers – use 1-6 drops. Diffusers are specifically made for use with essential oils. There are many different kinds of diffusers and they can be heated by electricity or by candle flame. Be sure the bowl part of the diffuser is made of non-porous material so that it can be wiped clean before a different essential oil is used in it. The main idea is that the bowl is heated by the heat source allowing the essential oil molecules to be released into the air.
  • Light bulbs – 1-2 drops. Heat from light bulbs can release essential oil molecules into the air. You can put the essential oil directly on the light bulb before you turn it on or you can use a light bulb ring. Do not put the essential oil on a bulb that is hot because the oils are inflammable. Light bulb rings only work on the bulb type of light bulbs. They do not work on the new coiled, energy-saving type bulbs. Make sure the light bulb ring fits on your bulb before you add the oils. I didn’t do that and when it didn’t fit the bulb, it fell off and broke!
  • Humidifiers – 1-9 drops. Add the essential oil to the water.
  • Radiators – 1-9 drops. Add the essential oil to a cotton ball and place it by the pipe or somewhere that puts it in contact with the heat.
  • Room sprays – 4 -8 drops per 1 cup water. Use a new plant sprayer  and add warm (not boiling) water, add the essential oil and shake well before using. You can spray the mist into the air or on the carpets, curtains, and furniture. Do not let the water fall on good wood.
  • Water bowls – 1-9 drops. Pour boiling water into a bowl and add the essential oil. Close doors and windows and allow 5 minutes for the aroma to fill the room.
  • Wood fires – 1 drop per log. Use cypress, pine, sandalwood, or cedarwood essential oils. Put 1 drop on each log and let it soak for 30 minutes before using. The oil will be effective on the log for a long time so you can prepare logs in advance and use one essential oil log per fire.

Using Essential Oils II

water methodYesterday we talked about some body methods you can use to get the maximum effect from your essential oils. Today let’s talk about the water techniques for using these wonderful oils.

Water Techniques

  • Baths – use a maximum of 8 drops of essential oils in the bath or the amount directed for use in a particular recipe. First, close the bathroom door and run the bath, then add the essential oil and swish the water around. Soak in the tub for at least ten minutes while relaxing and breathing deeply. You can dilute the essential oils in a carrier oil before adding it to the water to help your skin feel silky smooth while also relaxing your body.
  • Bidet – use 2 – 3 drops of essential oil diluted in 1 teaspoon carrier oil. Run warm water from the bidet or from the tap, add the essential oil and swish it around so the oils don’t irritate mucous membranes.
  • Douche – only use this method if you are under the care of a naturopath. Add the essential oil to boiled and cooled water from the tap or warmed, bottled spring water. Shake the douche thoroughly before using.
  • Jacuzzi – use 3 drops per person using the jacuzzi.
  • Sauna – use 2 drops per 2 1/2 cups of water. Use eucalyptus, tea tree or pine essential oils. Mix the essential oils in the water  and throw it onto the heat source as usual. Only use one of these three oils because they are the only ones that enter the body with inhalation and exit by perspiration. All three oils are very beneficial as cleansers and detoxifiers.
  • Shower – as directed or use a maximum  of 8 drops essential oil. First, wash as usual in the shower. Then add the essential oil to your washcloth or sponge and rub it over your body quickly as you stand under the running water. Deeply breathe in the aromatic steam.
  • Sitz bath – as directed in your recipe or 2-3 drops. Run a bath to hip level or use a bowl or pan that is big enough for you to lower your behind into it. Add your essential oil and swish thoroughly so the oils don’t irritate your delicate mucous membranes.
  • Hand bath – use 2-4 drops of essential oil – soak the hands for a maximum of 10 minutes in a bowl of warm water.
  • Foot bath – as directed in your recipe or 2-6 drops. Soak your feet for twenty minutes in a bowl of warm water.
