Birch Essential Oil

Author: Dr. Larita

Yesterday I talked about using birch essential oil in the shower but there are many other wonderful uses for this well studied oil. Just remember, birch oil is not for internal use and if pregnant or breastfeeding, you shouldn’t use it at all. Birch should be diluted at all times and it’s only recommended for topical use.

Uses for Birch Essential Oil

  1. Muscle pain and spasms – birch has analgesic properties and may help relieve muscle and joint pain and aid in alleviating spasms, headaches and toothaches. Apply it topically to the sore area or apply it to the outside of the mouth for toothaches.
  2. Joint discomfort – birch essential oil may help improve circulation and it has detoxifying agents that may aid in reducing swelling and discomfort of joints. Apply it topically to the area of pain.
  3. Inflammation & cooling – because birch oil helps cool inflammation, it might be useful to someone suffering from joint issues caused by too much uric acid. Apply 3-4 drops to the area to ease symptoms.
  4. Stomach issues and cramps – since birch has anti-spasmodic properties, it may assist in relieving stomach discomfort and cramps throughout the body. Apply 2-3 drops in a carrier oil to the abdomen or add 3-5 drops to a warm bath.
  5. Mood and self-esteem – birch oil stimulates the nervous, sensory and circulatory systems. It has a warming effect and can provide a sense of peace, confidence and awareness. Diffuse birch oil or apply it topically to wrists, the back of the neck and the soles of the feet.
  6. Circulation – birch oil stimulates the circulatory system and can boost circulation. To aid and encourage blood flow, apply to areas where there is poor circulation.
  7. Kidney detox – birch oil is both diuretic and a stimulant by nature so it aids in the removal of toxins through increased urination and perspiration. Dilute birch oil with a carrier ail and massage it into the skin to support kidney detox.

shower2If you really want to feel good after a strenuous workout, take an aromatherapy shower. A shower with soap and warm water feels good but it won’t provide the deep cleaning you get with essential oils because they help to eliminate waste products from your body and that will prevent sore, aching muscles.

To take advantage of using essential oils in the shower, put 3 neat drops of essential oil on a clean washcloth. Rub the towel all over your body and then shower as usual. A good blend of oils to use for this purpose is a combination of equal parts rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus/peppermint essential oil. After your shower, massage your muscles with a muscle relaxing oil or a toning oil depending on which quality you seek.

Essential Oils To Use Before And In The Shower

High blood pressure or hypertension is a medical condition in which the movement of blood flowing through the arteries is too high forcing the arterial wall to become distorted. It  is a major cause of heart disease and stroke. The three leading causes of high blood pressure include a diet high in salt, stress, alcohol, caffeine, smoking, obesity, inactivity, birth control pills and heavy metal poisoning. Many times, there are no symptoms as your pressure increases but the warning signs are chest pains, confusion, headaches, ear noise or buzzing, irregular heartbeat, nose bleeds, tiredness or vision changes.

Effective Essential Oils

  • Clary Sage – relaxes the arteries and may help decrease the risk of heart problems.
  • Ylang Ylang – known to improve blood flow and cool inflammation.
  • Frankincense – has sedating properties and promotes deep breathing and relaxation.
  • Lavender – helps reduce the effects of stress which is a cause of high blood pressure.

You can use inhalation therapy at home to lower you blood pressure. Simply fill a bowl with steaming water and add 1 drop each of frankincense, lavender, clary sage and ylang ylang essential oils. Cover your head with a soft towel and inhale for at least 3 minutes before bed.

hemorrhoids2Hemorrhoids are structures in the anal canal that help us control and move our bowels. They can become swollen and inflamed due to a myriad of reasons and when that happens, they are quite painful. You can have internal or external hemorrhoids. The internal ones may not be painful but can cause you to have bloody stools. External hemorrhoids cause pain in the anal area. At the first sign of hemorrhoids, start drinking plenty of water and taking vitamin E nutritional supplements. In addition, start the following essential oil treatment for hemorrhoids:

Dilute the essential oils in 2 tablespoons of wheatgerm oil or 1 ounce of KY jelly and apply it to the hemorrhoids several times daily. Other things you can do to help yourself if you suffer hemorrhoids follow:

  • eat a high fiber diet to prevent reoccurence of the problem
  • apply witch hazel neat to the hemorrhoids to reduce swelling and itching
  • apply garlic directly to the area and use plenty of garlic and onions in your diet because they increase elasticity of the veins
  • keep the area clean, washing it gently after each bowel movement
  • try sitting on a cushion with your knees raised and/or lay down with a pillow beneath your knees and one under your neck
  • some people get relief from wrapping a hot water bottle in a towel and apply it before your bowel movement

I am giving you a list of anti-aging essential oils that will help you combat wrinkles when you use them alone or in combinations of two or more. You can use these oils in the bath, as a face oil, or for a body rub. Just remember to treat all of your skin, not just the skin on your face. Everyone’s skin regenerates at a different rate so give yourself at least 30 days to see outward signs of improvement.

If your neck is showing signs of age, you might want to give it a special treatment of the following synergistic  blend of essential oils. Use 10 drops of rose, 7 drops clary-sage, 10 drops lemon, and 20 drops carrot essential oil blended well with 1 teaspoon  of evening primrose oil. Gently massage this mixture into the skin and leave it on for at least ten minutes before wiping off the excess oil.

After a long winter of turtle-neck sweaters and woolen scarves, the neck will benefit greatly if you slough off dead skin cells, brighten up and tone the neck and prepare it for a treatment oil as discussed in part I of essential oils for neck care. Mix 1 teaspoon of ground almond with 1/2 teaspoon of jojoba oil into a paste and rub it all over the neck and chest area in upward movements. Leave this on for 10 minutes then rinse it off with water followed by a rinse with the following tonic water: 1/4 teaspoon cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon spring water, 1 teaspoon witch hazel, and 2 drops lemon essential oil. Mix the lemon essential oil with the witch hazel and then blend that with the other ingredients. Rinse most of the paste off with water and then add the vinegar tonic water to the final rinse until all the almond paste is gone.

Have you ever seen a woman whose face was beautiful but when you glanced at her neck, it marred her appearance? No matter how much make up and concealer is on the face, if you don’t take care of the delicate skin on your neck, it will be like a lovely delicate rose on a stalk that can not support it. The neck is one of the first places the body begins to show its age.  Crinkled skin, loss of elasticity, wrinkles and double chins all lead one to look older even though great care is put into maintaining the good looks of the face. You can try to keep your neck covered with a scarf but that is not practical and, thankfully, the neck responds extremely well to essential oil treatments.

The essential oils to use for neck care are rose, geranium, clary-sage, lemon, lemongrass, black pepper, or carrot. Use any one of these oils added to a carrier oil like jojoba, evening primrose, or avocado to begin your treatments.  The neck is a very delicate area and must be cleansed with the same care you use on your face. Add one drop of one of the above essential oils to each 3/4 teaspoon of your usual cleansing cream. Then each night before bed apply the following blend: 8 drops of pettigraine, 3 drops of orange, 10 drops carrot oil, 14 drops palma rosa, and 5 drops of lemon blended well with 3 teaspoons jojoba oil, 2 teaspoons wheatgerm oil, and 2 teaspoons of avocado oil. Leave this on for a few minutes and then wipe off any excess with a tissue before going to bed.

Looking Younger

Author: Dr. Larita

Nobody wants to get old, and more importantly, nobody wants to look like they’re getting old. That’s why there has been much progress recently in finding ways to have youthful-looking skin and natural ways to make yourself look younger, so that you can look better and feel better about yourself.

One of the best ways to keep yourself looking young is through anti-aging skin care, which fights off wrinkles and unwanted lines on your face. Even something as simple as keeping away the wrinkles can be enough to take off the years. Finding ways to remove varicose veins and having smoother skin can also be helpful when it comes to looking more youthful and vibrant.

lemonIf you have already purchased your Essential Oil Kit, you will have lemon and marjoram essential oils on hand. Lemon essential oil is good for nervous conditions and blood pressure, among many other uses. It also has theraputic uses when blended with other essential oils for the treatment of tension headaches. Marjoram has been used for centuries in a variety of ways. Aromatherapists use marjoram as an alternative treatment for anxiety and high blood pressure.

  • Use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or add 8-10 drops to bath water before bed to treat anxiety, grief, hyperactivity, insomnia, nervous tension and stress.
  • Use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil for a full body massage or 8-10 drops in a bath to treat high blood pressure.

If you are pregnant, do not use marjoram for aromatherapy. It is also not suitable for use with children. If there is a diagnosis of depression, avoid using marjoram because it has a strong sedative property and overuse of the oil can cause drowsiness. I don’t know why anyone else would want to, but some religious institutions have used marjoram to suppress sexual desires and impulses because of its anti-aphrodisiac property.
